Where to go with a small child
Places that actually work, by age range, and what to bring so you do not have to head home early.
A baby who is not walking yet
- A park with shade and a blanket on the ground. Watching leaves move is more entertaining than it sounds.
- The market in the morning: noise, colour and smells, and you get the week's shopping done as well.
- The beach or a lake late in the afternoon, when the sun is weak.
Once she is walking
- A square with uneven ground: grass, sand, gravel. Tiring and fun at the same time.
- A nursery, botanical garden or plant centre. Usually cheap or free, and shaded.
- An aquarium or a butterfly house, if your town has one.
- A short flat trail with a goal at the end: a bridge, a stream, a big rock.
What is always missing
- Water and a piece of fruit.
- A complete change of clothes.
- Sunscreen and a hat.
- Leaving the house before ten or after four. Nobody copes in the middle of the day.

The mirror
Sit with her facing a mirror and talk. The reaction changes from month to month, and filming the same scene every couple of months makes a beautiful sequence.

The first trip
What to bring, how much travelling time she can take, and how not to come home without a single photo of the three of you.
